Compare the scope, not just the number at the bottom
A practical way to compare home-service estimates: separate diagnosis, repair scope, materials, scheduling and approvals before choosing a provider.
Put the proposals beside the same request
Two estimates can describe different jobs. Start with a short account of the problem, the property location and the outcome you want. Give each business the same brief. If one proposal covers a repair and another covers replacement, ask why their recommendations differ before comparing the totals. A lower total is not much use if a necessary part of the work is absent.
Ask what is included in writing
The Federal Trade Commission recommends written estimates covering the work, materials, timing and price. Use those headings to organize your questions. Separate a diagnostic visit from the work that may follow it. Ask who authorizes changes, whether a return visit is included and how any exclusions will be explained. Keep a copy of the version you approve rather than relying on a description from a phone conversation.
Make the next conversation specific
For example, “Does this include removing the old equipment?” is easier to answer than “Is this the best price?” Ask for clarification of any gap between proposals and give the business a chance to explain its scope. Confirm the provider’s identity and relevant credentials separately. LocalFoundry helps organize the enquiry; the receiving business confirms the actual work, availability and terms.
