Generator planning: safe placement and connection are separate decisions

Portable generators belong outdoors with exhaust kept away from occupied buildings and openings. Connecting backup power to house wiring requires a qualified design; never improvise a backfeed connection.

Choose the loads and operating plan

List essential equipment and how long it may need power. Include starting behavior and any critical needs in the professional discussion rather than selecting a generator from one advertised output number. Backup planning also needs fuel, weather, safe access and a household operating procedure. Equipment ownership is not proof that the home has a safe connection arrangement.

Keep exhaust outside and away

CPSC recommends operating portable generators outdoors at least twenty feet from the house, directing exhaust away from homes and other buildings. Never operate one in a garage, basement, crawlspace or enclosed porch. Follow the exact manufacturer instructions and account for nearby openings. A CO shutoff feature does not make indoor use safe.

Separate the two safety questions

A safe electrical connection cannot compensate for unsafe exhaust placement, and safe placement does not authorize an improvised wiring connection.

Plan before the power fails

Ask a qualified electrician about an appropriate transfer arrangement and required approvals if powering house circuits. Never use an improvised cord to feed power into a wall outlet. Keep CO alarms maintained and respond to an alarm by getting outside and calling emergency services. Request a demonstration and written instructions before depending on the system during an outage.

Questions homeowners ask

Is an open garage door enough ventilation?

No. CPSC says portable generators must be used outside, away from the home and openings. An open garage does not make indoor operation safe.

Can I plug the generator into a wall outlet?

No. Do not improvise backfeeding. A qualified electrician must design the appropriate connection for supplying home circuits.

Does automatic CO shutoff allow closer placement?

Do not treat it as permission to ignore placement instructions. Follow CPSC and manufacturer guidance; a safety feature does not remove the exhaust hazard.
